Gary Twigger

What does your role as Strategic IT Advisor involve?

My role is to help Labyrinth and our clients ensure their technology, governance and cybersecurity are aligned with best practices and, more importantly, support the way their businesses operate and grow.

With experience spanning technical support, operational management and strategic consultancy, I work with business leaders to design practical solutions that improve security, resilience and day-to-day efficiency.

I also make a mean cup of tea.

When did you become interested in IT?

I fell in love with technology when my family bought our first home computer, a Commodore 64C, in the late 1980s. I still remember waiting 45 minutes for games to load, only for them to crash just as they were about to start.

In 1995, we upgraded to a Gateway 2000 PC and installed Windows 95 from 13 floppy disks. At the time it felt like the most powerful machine on earth, despite having just 8 MB of RAM.

From the age of 12, I spent weekends building custom PCs in a family friend’s computer shop, usually paid in McDonald’s. I did it for the love of technology, and admittedly for the Big Macs.

What were you doing before joining Labyrinth Technology?

I studied IT at college and began my first paid MSP role in 2005. Since then, I have spent more than 20 years working with award-winning MSPs in London in roles covering technical support, operations and strategic consultancy.

During that time, I have worked with organisations ranging from start-ups to large international corporations.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

When I am not working and on the rare occasions I step away from technology, I enjoy travelling and spending time in Malta, where my father owns a bar.

There are few better ways to unwind than sitting in the Mediterranean sun with a cold beer, socialising and watching the world go by.

I am also a big fan of legal thrillers by John Grisham, and my favourite film is A Few Good Men.

What does your role as Specialist Support Manager entail?

I spend lots of time on the computer! On a day-to-day basis I manage and work through helpdesk tickets, be it from Labyrinth Clients or other clients that we provide specialist support to, many of whom are located outside the UK. For these specialist clients I work closely with Motorola that provide the essential Radio Communication networks, as we provide the tools to monitor those systems. It’s an extremely interesting field, and I am lucky that I get to visit a lot of my clients outside of the UK.

When did you become interested in IT?

I was involved with computing from around 10 years old. I’m originally from Poland and in the 1990’s desktop PC’s were considered a luxury. However, I was lucky enough be the only kid in school to have one, an Amiga 500. This led to me becoming passionate about gaming computing in general. As there were no pre-built PC’s in Poland at that time, you had to build one from scratch if you wanted to game, and that’s what started my adventure with IT. Many mistakes, burned motherboards, melted CPU’s and very angry parents! That need to always be exploring new aspects of IT keeps me expanding my knowledge, and I’ve now accumulated many qualifications, such as Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Information Technology, CompTia A+, CISCO CCNA, CISCO Cyber Security  and more!

What did you do before joining Labyrinth?

After arriving in the UK I worked in retail as a cycling technician (I love cycling!), building and selling bikes. I had been helping with some of the IT work in the store (unofficially), and because of that was offered a helpdesk role with the parent company in France. However, I didn’t fancy moving out of the UK at that time, so looked around and landed a role at Labyrinth in 2009.

What do you enjoy when you are away from work?

I love extreme sports. Especially everything to do with two wheels. I ride Mountain Bikes (Enduro, All Mountain), Off Road Motorcycles and Road Motorcycles. I also have several diving certifications and try to dive every time I am on holiday. These days though, I spend lots of time entertaining my two children –  making sure they grow into adventurous, curious, good people.

What is your favourite holiday destination?

I couldn’t name just 1 place, as I believe there are way too many excellent places out there to be able to list just a few in a favourite’s category. Travel is a passion of mine and I love exploring new places, cultures, and the food! I’ve visited over 40 countries and been to every continent, experiencing such thigs as diving with Whale Sharks and getting lost in vast underwater caves (cenotes) in Mexico!

What do you do at Labyrinth?

As COO & CTO, I lead operations and technical strategy, ensuring our solutions align with how our clients actually operate. We don’t just support IT, we design secure, scalable environments that enable resilience, efficiency, and growth.

My focus is simple: helping organisations achieve operational excellence and meaningful security maturity in a rapidly evolving digital world.

When did you get into IT?

I’ve been interested in various aspects of IT from a young age, influenced by my Father who is the Technical Director for an international technology company. My career in IT began in 2008. I joined Labyrinth Technology in 2015 and before that worked as an IT Manager for a large financial services firm in the City. I hold various accreditations in Cyber Security, Microsoft 365, Networking and IT Service Management (ITIL).

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

My life outside of work is spent with my wife and four young children (3 boys and a girl!). I also have my own personal YouTube channel racing toy cars! If I don’t have the Barbecue on, you might catch me playing Age of Empires 2.

Do you have a favourite holiday destination?

Anywhere where the sun is. I have been to New York, San Franiscio, LA, Orlando, Paris, Berlin, Spain, Croatia and Greece.

What is your favourite TV series, and why?

Breaking Bad. The storyline and cinematography are outstanding. I’m also a big Game of Thrones fan, and might have to give it a re-watch after visiting Kings Landing in Dubrovnik, Croatia as part of a recent Cyber Security conference!

When did you become interested in IT, and why did you start the Labyrinth business?

I’ve always loved fiddling around with technology since I was a teenager, and it’s something that I still like to do today. I enjoy exploring the possibilities that new and improved hardware and software delivers to people in all scenarios, whether it’s gaming, business or personal activities. I was fortunate that this passion was something that my parents encouraged me to pursue.

It was actually an incident that involved sourcing computers for my parents that started Labyrinth Technology, because they were trying to buy two identical computers, and the supplier they were using delivered two of the same make/model, but setup to different specifications. As far as he was concerned that was job done. I realised that providing IT support and services could be done in a better way!

What were you doing before starting Labyrinth?

For many years I was a police officer in the City of London. After probation I spent time as a Special Branch Detective and then a lead planner in the Operational Planning Department working on projects of national importance such as the Golden Jubilee celebrations and the Progressive Governance event at Guildhall.

What do you like to do out of work?

As well as my role as MD of Labyrinth, I’m also a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Tin Plate Workers, as well as being a Magistrate in Southeast London. Both of these are very enjoyable and satisfying and keep me very busy. I also like a bit of gaming when time allows, and watching films and TV (especially if it’s something in the MCU!).

On the subject of films, what is your favourite?

I have too many favourite films to narrow it down to just one, and even a short-list changes depending on the mood I’m in!

Where do you like to go on holiday?

My favourite type of holiday is to go cruising. I just love the whole thing about it and find it very relaxing. Going from place to place in a very calming atmosphere totally recharges my batteries.

Do you have a favourite quote?

“Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.” Winston Churchill, 11 November 1947
