Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) is the productivity cloud designed to help each of us achieve what matters, in our work and life, with best-in-class Office apps, intelligent cloud services, and advanced security.
Microsoft 365 is a subscription service that starts at just £4.50 per user per month. Different plans offer different functionality.
At the heart of the service are the Office apps: Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. These apps are the foundation of office life for many millions of people around the world! Some of the subscriptions also include OneNote, Publisher and Access.
However, Microsoft 365 extends to much, much more than these core products.
Teams is the video calling and collaboration service that has surged to prominence over the last twelve months.
SharePoint is Microsoft’s collaborative service environment that provides tools for sharing data and documents throughout your company and beyond.
And, of course, everything is brought together by the power of Exchange, the flagship hosted email server.
There are some less well-known apps that are also available as part of Microsoft 365 including Planner, Forms, Yammer and Booking. The service also offers some advanced security features and technologies that help to protect against and provide visibility about spam, malware, viruses, phishing attempts, malicious links, and other threats. It is incredibly important in today’s world that businesses of all sizes consider IT security and have an understanding of these threats and how they can be countered.

Internet access is required to install and activate all Office 365 plans and to manage your subscription account. Internet connectivity is also required to access Office 365 cloud productivity services, including email, conferencing, IT management, and other services. Many Office 365 plans also include the desktop version of Office, for example, Office 365 Small Business Premium and Office 365 Enterprise E3. One of the benefits of having the desktop version of Office applications is that you can work offline and have the confidence that the next time you connect to the Internet all your work will automatically sync, so you never have to worry about your documents being up to date.
“Office 365” refers to subscription plans that include access to Office applications plus other productivity services that are enabled over the Internet (cloud services), such as Lync web conferencing and Exchange Online hosted email for business, and additional online storage with OneDrive and Skype world minutes for home.
As long as you are paying for an office 365 licence, shared mailboxes are free up to a maximum mailbox size of 50GB.
Business essentials comes with a 50GB mailbox size and does not provide access to the Office suite of apps. Business premium comes with a full suite of business applications including Word, Excel & Outlook.
